Hazmat Incident - Dover, DE YMCA

Thursday, June 5, 2014

The Dover Fire Dept. was alerted for a hazmat incident at the YMCA.  Due to the nature of the incident the Kent County Decon Team was also alerted.  Upon arrival it was determined that chlorine was delivered into a tank of muriatic acid instead of the chlorine tank.  The building was immediately evacuated due to the possible hazards the reaction between the two chemicals could cause.  When DNREC arrived they donned hazmat suits and made entry into the building to provide a better assessment of the situation.  Upon completion of their assessment they advised it would be best to let the reaction run its course and then pump the chemicals out of the tank.  DNREC remained on scene to monitor the situation while a contractor completes the clean up. -Robin Andino
