Late reported- On 2/14/14 Kent County 911 alerted Station 48 (Felton) for an animal rescue. The RP reported that a family horse had gotten loose and made its way into their pool. Command 48 (Asst Chief Schulties) arrived and after a quick assessment requested the SPCA, a large tow truck and the Kent County Special Ops Team make a response. Once the special ops officer arrived he determined the best way to get the horse out with minimal injury would be to pump the water out of the pool and build a ramp so the horse could walk out. While 48-1 pulled a draft, special ops members built a heavy duty ramp to place in the pool. Once the water level was low enough the ramp was placed in the pool and secured. The horse then walked up the ramp and out of the pool. The tow truck remained on scene as a secondary means of extrication if the first was unsuccessful. Crews operated for a little over a hour and a half to free the horse. Agencies that had personnel operating on scene were the Felton Community Fire Company, Cheswold Vol. Fire Co., Hartly Vol. Fire Co., Leipsic Vol. Fire Co., Camden-Wyoming Fire Co., Marydel Vol. Fire Co., Bowers Vol. Fire Co., First State Animal Care & SPCA, Kent County Special Operations, Delaware State Police and Chambers Towing.
