Seaford public schools were briefly locked down today as a result of reported gunfire in the area of West Seaford Elementary, police said. Nobody was hurt.
It happened about 1:30 p.m. in the area of Stein Highway and Sussex Avenue. There were shots fired between two vehicles, with no damage or injuries reported, according to Seaford Police spokesman Lt. Richard Jamison.
The incident occurred in close proximity to the elementary school, which was holding “field day” activities. No information was found to indicate the incident was related to any school activities, police also said.
Police reported a possible black Dodge vehicle with Maryland tags and a possible silver Honda vehicle exchanged gunfire. Officers arriving at the scene failed to locate any suspects, police said.
All Seaford District schools were locked down as a precaution from about 1:45-2:10 p.m., police said children were released into the custody of their parents when the lockdown was lifted, according to school district spokeswoman Stephanie Smith. She also said Superintendent Kevin Carson did visit the campus of West Seaford Elementary afterwards.
