A crash near Bridgeville on 6-1-2014 left one person dead and one person injured.
The crash occurred at 2:57 a.m. An initial investigation by the Collision Reconstruction Unit indicates Garrett Cordrey, 21, of Newark, was driving a 2006 Ford F-250 south in the northbound lanes of Sussex Highway (U.S. 13), north of Camp Road. His vehicle collided with a northbound 2006 Honda CRV, which was traveling in the left northbound lane of Sussex Highway.
After the collision, the F-250 left the roadway and the CRV rotated 180 degrees, coming to rest facing south in the right northbound lane. It was then struck by a northbound 1996 Freightliner tractor trailer, which overturned, spilling its load of woodchips. While this occurred, one other vehicle, a 2005 Chrysler Crossfire, sustained damage by striking debris in the roadway.
Cordrey and the driver of the Crossfire, Kyle Thompson, 28, of Salisbury, Maryland, were not injured. The driver of the tractor trailer, Howard West, 62, of Seaford, was transported by ambulance to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries and released. The driver of the CRV, a 58-year-old Denton, Maryland woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. All drivers involved in this collision were properly restrained at the time of the crash.
The Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing its investigation into this crash, and no charges have been filed. Lane closures on Sussex Highway remain as the scene is cleared.
