On 6-29-2014 the Laurel Fire Department along with Sussex County Medic 102 was alerted for a accident with rescue on West St just down the street from the fire house. Reports came in as a vehicle struck 3 utility poles and power lines were down around the vehicle. Command arrived on scene to find a SUV partially on its side with the driver still inside the vehicle. Due to the high voltage power lines all around the vehicle fire crews had to wait 10 minutes until Delmarva Power could shut down the power grid so it was safe to enter the area and gain access to the patient. EMS crews did a load and go type of packaging and transported the patient to Laurel Fire Department where Delaware State Police Medevac Trooper-2 was waiting to transport the patient to Christiana Hospital. The roadway was shut down for nearly 24 hours so utility crews could repair all the damaged utility poles and wires.
